Darts player on a mission

A trailblazing sportsman is hoping to inspire more Asians into the world of darts.

Rohit Rabadia is the only Asian darts players on the UK BDO darts circuit and is moving to the North west so he can partake in more competitive games.

The sport remains one that few Asians have ventured into and it is something Rohit is hoping to change. “It is most definitely a working class white sport which I want change. My main goal is to get more Asians on the circuit.

“I have only ever seen one other Asian at one event.

“When I first started playing first at the big events I was very uncomfortable knowing I was the only Asian around.

“For a few events I felt I was on my own in the sense that people didn’t talk to me.

“But when I started beating players and proving Ican do it, it’s been fantastic, all the big professionals are now very close mates with me.” Rohit has played darts from the early age of 15 and won some local community tournaments. He was away from darts for 11 years and only came back to darts in 2007.

Rohit has been playing playing darts from the early age of 15 and won some local community tournaments. He was away from darts for 11 years and only came back in 2007.

But his career has really taken off and he now competes at some of the biggest tournaments in Europe.

In March Rohit will be in Holland and in Poland for two major ranking events. He feels that some people don’t see darts as a major sport. It was another misconception he wanted to change.

“It’s not something you can just pick up and be good at, it takes many hours of practice every day and arithmetically you have to be spot on. Even as far as knowing what you are going to be throwing six darts in advance. If you maths isn’t there you will not be a great player. Hand and eye coordination is the key and lots of practise and determination.”

He is moving to the North West to compete in better leagues.

“We are moving to Warrington soon so that he can play in more competitive leagues as most of the ranking events are up north.”

And he had this advice for anyone thinking of going into the sport, “Join local leagues and work your way up from there.

After local leagues get into super leagues and then try get into county teams, this is the top end of darts and is where the best players play.

To improve your game you have to play the best players, yes you may lose a few times but eventually you will get one back which will boost your confidence.”

His new project www.TeamIndiaDarts.com will be launching soon and will be a gateway for Asians to get further in darts.
